LISA BIRMAN

unaccustomed

for Anne

she writes contrails in the sky

going elsewhere   coming home

the sound of skin   the sound of meat

an archive of embellished bone

all this longitude for latitude

trace a finger   cross a world

stretch the day beyond its hours

stretch the hour for the snap

it’s still yesterday this morning

read the paper   write the news

we dream of pages as she scores them

vows and vowels   the how and whom

she’s running late   spilling songlines

a catalogue of lost and found
