GARY LAWLESS

(What mauls our hearts)

What mauls our hearts

is the lack of bears.

what claws,  what

tears at us,

how much better to be

alive in this wild place,

moving among wolves,

bear and caribou, fast

moving water, how our hearts

feel the pain, cry out at

coming into an empty country.
