On March 13-15, 2003, The University of Michigan Special Collections
Library presented a symposium: "Makeup on Empty Space: A Celebration
of Anne Waldman." This symposium was held in honor of UM's acquisition
of the Anne Waldman Archive.
Over twenty poets, artists, and scholars joined Ms. Waldman for three
days of panels and poetry readings. Anne Waldman's archive, as described
by UM's Special Collections Library Head Librarian, Peggy E. Daub, is
a rich resource containing some 75 feet of letters, working manuscripts,
books, tapes, and photographs that provides extensive documentation
of both Waldman's activities and those of the many people with whom
she has collaborated in different ways over many years.
The Musueum of American Poetics was invited by UM to record this historic
symposium on video for the Special Collections Library and for MAP's
own American Poet Greats Lecture Series (APG). "Anne
Waldman Makeup on Empty Space," a 55 minute edited dvd film of the
symposium, is available only through MAP. This year, we have devoted
the entire APG series to bring you the following six exemplary panel
discussions that took place at the symposium.
